Van Life Escape is a place for practical and clear information about van life.
Instead of relying on personal storytelling or curated highlights — this site looks at the more practical side of it: how much things actually cost, what planning really involves, the trade-offs that come with living in a van, and the gear choices people end up making along the way. Van life is more than just a lifestyle, and it doesn’t work the same way for everyone.
The author behind Van Life Escape
Hello! I’m Rafi, the author behind Van Life Escape. I’m not living in a van myself yet — I can’t right now because of my studies and other personal reasons — but I got interested in van life through the financial and practical side of it.While researching it, I found that most of what’s written about van life is either marketing copy from conversion companies or one person’s individual experience presented as if it applies to everyone. I spent a lot of time digging before I found the actual information I was looking for.
That’s why I built Van Life Escape: so beginners can find those answers faster. What I do here is the unglamorous part — reading through hundreds of real owner threads, comparing notes across forums and build logs, checking current listing prices, and pulling out what’s actually consistent versus what’s just one person’s opinion.
That’s a different kind of expertise than having lived it. But it means every guide here reflects dozens of real experiences checked against each other, not a single blogger’s one van.
How a guide actually gets made
Every piece starts the same way: digging through real-world spaces — including van life forums, online communities, long-form blog posts, and YouTube build channels.
A claim that shows up in one place gets treated as an anecdote. A claim that shows up consistently across many independent owners — the same component failing or drawing complaints across unrelated builds, the same maintenance issue showing up across owners of a specific van model, the same regret about a layout or storage choice — gets treated as reliable enough to include.
For anything involving prices, I check current listings directly rather than repeating numbers other sites quote, which are often a year or two out of date by the time you read them.
What I won't do
I won’t claim personal experience I don’t have. If a guide includes a firsthand account, it’s because I talked to or quoted someone who’s actually lived it — not because I’m pretending to be them.
Where this is headed
Right now, most of the site is aimed at people just starting to research van life — the beginner-stage questions that come before any money gets spent. Over time, the plan is to go further: interviews with actual van lifers, price data tracked over months instead of a single snapshot, and coverage that goes beyond the first-timer basics.
